Kaempferol activates chloride secretion via the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway and expression of CFTR in T84 cells. (PubMed, Front Pharmacol)
Ion substitution of Cl- or CFTR inhibitors NPPB and glibenclamide or a Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransporter inhibitor bumetanide attenuated kaempferol-induced I sc response...The kaempferol-induced I Cl was mostly abolished by protein kinase A inhibitor H89, but not by tyrosine kinase inhibitors, AG490 and tyrphostin A23, or tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor vanadate...The mechanisms may involve the cAMP/PKA pathway and CFTR expression. Taken together, these findings reveal the beneficial effects of kaempferol to increase fluid secretion which can be used to treat constipation.

GATA6 Suppresses Lung Adenocarcinoma Progression by Activating CFTR to Modulate Arachidonic Acid Metabolism. (PubMed, Comb Chem High Throughput Screen)
The activation of CFTR by GATA6 hampered LUAD progression by modulating the AA metabolism pathway, suggesting that GATA6/CFTR axis might be a therapeutic target for LUAD patients.

Protein expression and localization of ABC transporters in pancreatic adenocarcinoma: Prognostic role of ABCC8. (PubMed, Pancreatology)
The study shows for the first time that the cytoplasmic ABCC8 protein expression has prognostic value in PDAC.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma at the site of tracheo-esophageal fistula repair in a patient with cystic fibrosis. (PubMed, BMJ Case Rep)
Many factors such as low expression of CF transmembrane conductance regulator gene, inflammation and resulting metaplasia, bacterial dysbiosis, dysregulation of Wnt/β-catenin signalling, immune cell infiltration, disruption of intestinal stem cell homeostasis and intestinal barrier integrity have all been implicated in the causation of GI malignancy in patients with CF. Based on shared decision-making in high-risk transplanted individuals, esophagogastroduodenoscopy can be considered alongside colon cancer screening which is currently recommended starting at age 30-35 years.

Modulation of vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) by Gelam honey in bilateral oophorectomized rats. (PubMed, Front Endocrinol (Lausanne))
Muc1 is associated with mucous production at the vaginal epithelial layer. In conclusion, the protein and gene expression changes in the vagina by Gelam honey had reduced the occurrence of vaginal atrophy in surgically-induced menopause models.

Pharmacological inhibition of CFTR attenuates nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) progression in mice. (PubMed, Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis)
Furthermore, the pharmacological inhibition of CFTR significantly reduced NASH progression in mice and its overexpression aggravated lipotoxicity in human hepatic cells. These results, thus, underscore the involvement of murine Cftr in the pathogenesis of NASH and raise the intriguing possibility of its pharmacological inhibition in human NASH.

Lower Expression of CFTR Is Associated with Higher Mortality in a Meta-Analysis of Individuals with Colorectal Cancer. (PubMed, Cancers (Basel))
Meta-analysis of overall death stratified by microsatellite instable (MSI) versus microsatellite stable (MSS) status indicated potential interaction between MSI/MSS status and CFTR expression, (p-interaction: 0.06). The findings from these three datasets support the hypothesis that low CFTR expression is associated with increased CRC mortality.

Identification of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator as a prognostic marker for juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia via the whole-genome bisulfite sequencing of monozygotic twins and data mining. (PubMed, Transl Pediatr)
The overall survival analysis demonstrated that a high level of CFTR expression was associated with a worse survival rate in patients with JMML (P=0.039). CFTR promoter hypermethylation may be a novel biomarker for the diagnosis, monitoring of disease progression, and prognosis of JMML.

Increased expression of glucagon-like peptide-1 and cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator in the ileum and colon in mouse treated with metformin. (PubMed, Endocr J)
Although we could not identify db/db mouse-specific factors associated with metformin-induced diarrhea, these factors may modulate colon function. Wood creosote may not interact with these factors but ameliorates diarrhea symptoms.

CFTR and Gastrointestinal Cancers: An Update. (PubMed, J Pers Med)
Finally, it will discuss the emerging CFTR modulator drugs that have shown promising results in improving CFTR function in CF patients. The potential impact of these modulator drugs on the treatment and prevention of GI cancers can provide a new example of personalized cancer medicine.
