C-reactive Protein-albumin-lymphocyte Index as a Novel Biomarker for Progression in Patients Undergoing Surgery for Renal Cancer. (PubMed, Cancer Diagn Progn)
In addition to the existing risk factors for RCC recurrence, such as sarcomatoid features and Fuhrman grade, we propose that the CALLY index is a predictor of postoperative recurrence and that patients with a low CALLY index are good candidates for postoperative treatment. Our study may help select patients with pT3 disease with a high risk of recurrence who require postoperative treatment.

Prioritising primary care patients with unexpected weight loss for cancer investigation: diagnostic accuracy study (update). (PubMed, BMJ)
The risk of cancer in younger adults with unexpected weight loss presenting to primary care is <3% and does not merit investigation under current UK guidelines. However, in men aged ≥50 years, women aged ≥60 years, and younger patients with concurrent clinical features, the risk of cancer warrants referral for invasive investigation. Clinical features typically associated with specific cancer sites are markers of several cancer types when they occur with unexpected weight loss.

Mannosylated Fluoropolypeptide Nanovaccines Remodeling Tumor Immunosuppressive Microenvironment to Achieve Highly Potent Cancer Immunotherapy. (PubMed, Adv Healthc Mater)
Importantly, both MFPCOFG + NIR and personalized NVs can remarkably enhance the tumor infiltration of CD4+/CD8+T and NK cells to boost potent immunities and long-lasting memory effects, reduce regulatory T (Tregs) and M2 to remodel immunosuppressive TME in B16-OVA and 4T1 models, achieving superior tumor prevention, ablation, and tumor relapse and metastasis inhibition, as further orchestrated with anti-PD-1. Consequently, this work opens up a new avenue to design biocompatible polypeptide nanovaccines with potent immune-priming and TME-remodeling capabilities, holding great potentials to combat immune "cold" cancers with clinic-used anti-PD-1 for cancer immunotherapy and personalized immunotherapy.

The Prognostic Impact of Tumor Microenvironment and Checkpoint Blockade-Associated Molecules (PD-1, PD-L1, CD163 and CD14) in Nodal Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma, NOS. (PubMed, Indian J Hematol Blood Transfus)
In addition, cases that are > 60 years of age, that have Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance score ≥ 2, stage IV disease, high International Prognostic Index score score (≥ 3), elevation of LDH, low albumin level, low hemoglobin level, low peripheral blood lymphocyte count, high peripheral blood neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, high peripheral blood platelet/lymphocyte ratio were found to have worse overall survival. It was concluded that in patients with low number of PD-1 positive tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes have low survival rates and therefore PD-1 expression may be useful in indicating prognosis.

The Role of Pretreatment Serum Interleukin 6 in Predicting Short-Term Mortality in Patients with Advanced Pancreatic Cancer. (PubMed, Biomedicines)
With a median follow-up of 9.28 months, patients with lower IL-6 levels experienced markedly better median overall survival and progression-free survival than those with higher levels, underscoring IL-6's role in predicting disease prognosis. Multivariate analysis further confirmed IL-6 levels, alongside older age, and elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, as predictors of worse outcomes, suggesting that IL-6 could be a critical biomarker for tailoring treatment strategies in advanced PDAC, warranting further investigation into its role in systemic inflammation and the tumor microenvironment.

Antibodies against Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier Activating Enzyme May Be a Protective Factor from Rapid Progressive Interstitial Lung Disease in Patients Bearing Antibodies against Melanoma Differentiation Associated Gene 5. (PubMed, J Clin Med)
Anti-SAE antibodies were negatively correlated with RPILD as analyzed by univariate (OR = 0.245, p = 0.017) and multivariate (OR = 0.058, p = 0.036) regressions, indicating that they may be a protective factor in relation to RPILD (OR = 0.543, p = 0.008) or fatality (OR = 0.707, p = 0.012), which was also demonstrated in subgroup analyses. In contrast to various risk factors for RPILD or mortality, anti-SAE antibodies might conversely be a protective factor in anti-MDA5+ patients.

Rad51 and Systemic Inflammatory Indicators as Novel Prognostic Markers in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma. (PubMed, Technol Cancer Res Treat)
Our study found a close correlation between elevated Rad51 expression and inflammatory markers. High Rad51 expression, high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and low lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio are associated with lower survival rates. Correlation between Disease Biomarkers and Hemoglobin F Levels in Sickle Cell Patients (ASH 2023)
Hydroxyurea is a tremendously important drug in the management of patients with sickle cell complications due to its ability to stimulate production of fetal hemoglobin (HbF)...Although there have been prior studies that demonstrate higher levels of HbF are correlated with better patient outcomes, we observed that there is no significant relationship between HbF and biomarker levels of T. bili, LDH, AST, ALT and albumin in these 496 SCD patients. These findings suggest that there may be factors other than HbF levels that play a role in the presence and progression of complications in patient with SCD.

The association of blood biomarkers with treatment response and adverse health outcomes in older patients with solid tumors: A systematic review. (PubMed, J Geriatr Oncol)
Most studies did not find a significant association between blood biomarkers and clinical outcomes. The interpretation of current evidence on prognostic blood biomarkers is hampered by small sample sizes and inconsistent results across heterogeneous studies. The choice for blood biomarkers in the majority of included studies seemed driven by availability in clinical practice in retrospective cohort studies. Ageing biomarkers are rarely studied in older patients with solid tumors. Further research is needed in larger and more homogenous cohorts that combine clinical parameters and biomarkers before these can be used in clinical practice.
