Indeed, due its connection with #SickleCellTrait, #RenalMedullaryCarcinoma is one of the most powerful examples of an aggressive cancer afflicting vulnerable young minority populations. This work & others aims to improve outcomes for our patients with this cruel disease. (@PavlosMsaouel)

6/6 Our findings open new avenues for prevention and therapy by explaining why #SMARCB1 loss is a consistent hallmark of #RenalMedullaryCarcinoma in individuals with #SickleCellTrait & why these tumors are so distinctly refractory to hypoxia-inducing anti-VEGF therapies. #endRMC (@PavlosMsaouel)

4/6 Loss of #SMARCB1 conferred a survival advantage in renal tumor cells under hypoxic stress. Conversely, disruption of ubiquitin-mediated degradation of SMARCB1 conferred a growth disadvantage to #RenalMedullaryCarcinoma tumor cells in vivo. (@PavlosMsaouel)
