Higher pre-treatment expression of CTLA4 was observed to correlate with response to MPDL3280A. These results suggest that CTLA4, although an important regulator during T-cell expansion, is also a marker of the presence of activated T cells whose functional role as a negative regulator of intra-tumoral T cells appears to be less important than that of PD-L1.
